In September 2014 Debbie Jaffe sent to me a box containing 54 cassettes
of raw, original recordings that we made from 1981 to 1986. Some of this material was selected for issue on our early cassettes - 60 Minutes Of Laughter, In A Foreign Film by Viscera, Swamp Patrol 84, A Whole Universe Of Horror Movies by Viscera - plus later tapes from 1984-86. Early J & M Tape pages contain pictures of the tapes, audio players, and extensive notes on the recordings.
I will eventually add pages for all 54 Early Jaffe & McGee Tapes. Check back often for new stuff. These tapes were not official releases. They are offered here for historical purposes and for the fun of it, in all of their lo-fi glory! Early J & M Tapes are not in chronological order by recording date(s). |
The tapes contain hours and hours of dadaist shenanigans, minimalist improvisations, poetry & synth settings, Casio VL-Tone jams, faux rock rave-ups, library records, routines, tape experiments, pseudo folk tribalisms, answering machine messages, and much more, complete with mental illness, screw-ups, false starts, gaffes, goofs, and abandonment.
Much of this was recorded on a mono Panasonic shoebox-style cassette recorder, plus there are numerous recordings made with a stereo cassette deck and stereo room microphone. Plus there are live performance recordings and a handful of original 4-track tapes. In these early tapes you can hear us exploring, experimenting, looking for sounds -- in other words, you can hear us in our home sound laboratory making experimental music from scratch! This is about as primitive as it gets.
