Early Jaffe & McGee
Tape 15 |
Tape Specifics:
Cassette not stored in a case upon arrival, and case added on 09/05/14. Intermagnetics brand “Low Noise High Output” 60-minute cassette. Both erasure safety tabs were intact, and these were removed on 03-05-14.
On the Side A cassette label:
Indecipherable writing in pencil that was later scratched out in pencil. To the left: a big black “X” (to indicate that the tape should be kept and not erased or recorded over). Then the words “Improv -- some comedy”. Below that in blue ink: “LAST ½ VERY INTERESTING”
Attached to the cassette was a yellow Post-It Note that says (in black ink) Nov 10 1981 at point in reference tape.
On the Side B cassette label:
Upper left, indecipherable words later scratched out, might say “Sex Pistols”. Then, below that, written in black ink: “VERY INTERESTING IMPROV”. To the right of that is a big black “X” in black ink. Below that to the left, indecipherable word, scratched out, then the words somewhat faintly written: “Guitar, vocals, percussion”.
These recordings were made during the time that Debbie and Hal lived at Deb’s apartment on West 38th Street in Indianapolis, and were made with Debbie’s Panasonic model # RQ-309AS shoebox mono cassette recorder.
Side A:
00:04 - 04:18 - Hal on acoustic guitar, using “extended techniques”, no vocals. Likely recorded late 1981, maybe November. Previously-recorded contents of the tape can be very-faintly heard in the left channel.
04:19 - 15:54 - Another untitled guitar improvisation, again with no vocals.
15:55 - 16:41 - Deb and Hal making crazy vocal sounds with some kind of pre-recorded sounds in the background (maybe Fripp, from the Exposure album).
16:42 - 17:08
17:09 - Percussive sounds and then various speeded-up-sounding pre-recorded sounds - something about “a way of life” (seem to recall something from a Fripp record…), other pre-recorded sounds and music.
Then two voices talking about “vulgar children” and other stuff, and I can’t tell if this is Hal & Deb or not, but it does sound pre-recorded because it sounds speeded-up.
Then “turntablisms” (needle on record, turntable being turned back and forth and spun by hand. An emergency vehicle siren can be briefly heard in background.
Then Hal & Deb talking about “that really great Eric Burdon & The Animals record”.
Actually, the more of this I hear, it sounds like Debbie and Hal talking in high-pitched voices (almost like “helium voices), and making other voice sounds. In places during this track Debbie talks in her normal voice. Lots of silliness/gibberish and laughing. Okay, later, at about 27:00 Hal says something about how talking in a high voice will strain your voice”.
“The genitals that ate Indianapolis”.
27:54 - November 10, 1981 (day of the week was Tuesday) - here is the reference point noted on the yellow Post-It note.
Hal tells the story of “The genitals that ate Indianapolis” in “Twilight Zone” style.
Recording ends at 30:45
Tape side ends at about 30:50.
Side B:
00:04 - 30:45 - one continuous side-long recording
Continuous instrumental and vocal improvisation with made-up on the spot words: acoustic guitar, percussion, vocal (Hal), and Deb later.
There is a part in which Hal improvises words about “we gotta move out of this place because the goddamn rent costs too much”.
Again, the previously-recorded contents of the tape can be very-faintly heard in the left channel.
The section from about 08:58 to about 09:16 - appears on 60 Minutes Of Laughter as “Why Do You Do It” - (26:01-26:19 on Side B of 60 MOL).
At about 28 minutes Debbie starts talking about “purple” and I’m reminded that at that time she had an infatuation with the color purple, or maybe just the word “purple”.
