Early Jaffe & McGee
Tape 12 |
Tape Specifics:
Not stored in case upon arrival. Intermagnetics Low Noise High Output 60 minutes cassette. Both write-protection tabs were intact. Removed 03/05/14.
On the label on Side A (screws side) of the tape there is Debbie’s handwriting with a “3” upper left, then a big black “X”, then “Cont.”, “Improv.”, “OK.”, “Ronstadt”. “3”, “Cont.”, and “Ronstadt” are scratched out.
On the label on Side B of the tape there is Debbie’s handwriting: “B.”, a big black “X”, “Cont.” (scratched out), “OK” (scratched out), “Debbie, Hal, Roger”, “Sessions -- October 23, 1981”, “Dancing Invisibles (the word “Dancers” is scratched out below the word Invisible(s)”.
All of the recordings on this tape were most likely recorded on the Panasonic model # RQ-309AS shoebox-style mono cassette recorder.
Side A:
The material on Side A was probably recorded in October 1981 at Debbie’s apartment on West 38th Street in Indianapolis. These improvisations consist of Hal vocalizing and playing acoustic guitar (with lots of rubbing, striking, thumping, and rasping on the strings and body). Debbie joins in occasionally with vocalizations. Done in a style similar to “Live At The Sanctuary” (on 60 Minutes Of Laughter).
00:07 - 2:36
“Blago Bung”
Hal on acoustic guitar and vocal, plus Deb on voice in a few places. Many of the words are definitely borrowed from Hugo Ball’s Dada sound poems.
2:39 - 07:26
“Lauli Lonni Cadori”. Hal on acoustic guitar and vocal. Many of the words are definitely borrowed from Hugo Ball’s Dada sound poems.
07:29 - 14:15
“Mipoola Palinga”. Same as above. Mipoola Palinga was Debbie’s Dada name. I seem to recall that I gave it to her. At the beginning we hear Debbie talking indistinctly. Made-up “sound poetry” type words and vocal sounds, pseudo - primitivisms/”Africanisms”.
14:16 - 20:57
“It’s A Love Song” Same as above. Made-up “sound poetry” type words and vocal sounds, pseudo - primitivisms/”Africanisms”. Around the 19:30 mark there is some word improvisation of English words.
20:58 - 28:07
Debbie and Hal talking at the beginning before Hal starts playing guitar and vocalizing; Debbie vocalizes in a few places this time.
28:08 - 30:11 end of tape
BLANK
Side B:
This side of tape is scratchy-sounding/distorted in places, due to tape deterioration?

00:03 - 03:07

03:08 - 04:11

Debbie & Hal on vocals. Words are from the poem “Ugly Talk” (written by Debbie), which was later recorded in an “official” version on A Whole Universe Of Horror Movies.
10:30 - 12:03
indistinct talking at beginning. “Mipoola Palinga”
12:04 -
re-do of previous song
various fragments of false starts, turning recorder off & on
13:32 -
sounds like “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” with Hal doing ahhhhs
14:35 -
“Jesus and the Little Children” (WTF?)
various comments by Hal about how horrible it was
various false starts, turning recorder off & on
16:14 - 21:06
a more together version of “Jesus and the Little Children”
but why?! :)
this version includes the phrase “don’t look out the window”, which was used in
