Active Listener was a small press magazine published by David Mattingly and Rick Karcasheff in Indianapolis, Indiana, 1982-84. Active Listener exposed and explored alternative forms of art and music, and presented alternative viewpoints.
Issues of AL were loaded with music reviews, lists of recommended listening and reading, film and TV reviews, editorials and essays, and poetry.
Active Listener was an essential publication from the early 1980s experimental music, art, and literature scene in Indianapolis, and it was instrumental in shaping the ideas and inspiration of the music and publications of Debbie Jaffe and Hal McGee.
