Review by Jerry Kranitz

Dreams From Within is a compilation curated by Darren Bentley for his Dreams From Within fanzine. He then sent the tape to Chris Phinney for U.S. distribution through Harsh Reality.

It’s probably safe to say that the title was inspired by the Death in June song of the same name as there seems to have been a connection between Bentley and Death in June’s Douglas Pearce. This is further supported by the gothic nature of most of the 23 bands on this compilation.

Bands like Sakura, Of Flames and Angels, Somewhere In Europe, Dance Naked, The Exiles, Garden of Pleasures, Casual Sanity, Pro Memoria, Nacht Shatten all play some variation on the classic goth rock sound. Dance Naked is the UK based trio of Alan Rider, Kleo Kay and Roger Foyster and the only band on this compilation I’m familiar with. Their song starts off spooky as hell, with ghoulish voices and effects, before launching into a goth rocking song.

Boysdream contribute an interestingly bent but mostly straightforward acoustic guitar strumming singer-songwriter tune.

Joy S is similarly acoustic driven, with guitar and tabla sounding percussion. I like the deep bass voice impassioned singer and semi-symphonic keys. This is one of my favorites of the set.

The Embrace play jangly acoustic driven goth.

Every New Dead Ghost play punky garage-goth.

Eyespeech are goth with an industrial dance and wigged out electronics edge.

Broken Faith are punk and metal with a goth infusion.

Die Laughing crank out hard driving 1980s guitar rock with a goth infusion.

Momento Mori are a good fun dancefloor synth-pop band.

I like Saffron Dreamshadow’s demonic theatrical narrative vocals backed by jangly acoustic guitar and spacey effects.

Before I Hang play quirkily danceable punk-pop.

Sarl’s Charisma are another favorite, contributing an excellent heavy rocking song with great guitars and vocals.

Passion and the Pure play a tribal brand of goth-punk.

X X Nemesis are yet another highlight of the set, playing darkly atmospheric but robotically aggressive goth-punk.

And Sonic Violence are a grungy punk-metal band.
