Review by Jerry Kranitz
This is the first of two sampler tapes showcasing the work of Chris Phinney and Michael Thomas Jackson’s Cancerous Growth project.
The tape kicks off with ‘Madman Rules’, a stoned, riffage riddled psychedelic dirge by the pre-Cancerous Growth trio of Chris, Michael and Dave Peterson, who recorded as R.S.V.P. This was a one-shot that produced the 1985 Escape From Fate tape (HR018).
Next up is the clatterously ambient ‘Brain Dead’, from Cancerous Growth’s 1985 Bound To Die cassette album (HR021). ‘Ratchet Head’ is a gloriously demented slab of Frankenstein laboratory space mayhem which appeared on the 1986 Cancerous Growth Remission tape (HR030).
NOTE: ‘Brain Highway’ by Cancerous Growth is listed next in the credits but was not included on the tape.
Wrapping up Side A is the trio of Chris, Michael and AMK, recording as White Cancerous Hand Growth. AMK was the alias of Anthony Michael King who also ran the Banned Production label. White Cancerous Hand Growth recorded the Inclined cassette album which was released in 1988 on Merzbow’s ZSF Produkt label and later reissued by Harsh Reality (HR265). Included on the sampler is ‘Permafrost 2’. It begins as a rumbling, droning death march, but steady percussion soon kicks in, giving the music a menacing ambient tribal feel that’s colored by an assortment of freaky effects.
Side B of the tape includes two lengthy tracks. ‘Hydrant (Ode To Officer Semprana)’ spills out multiple layers of cascading drone waves, wavering synths and effects. This was from Cancerous Growth’s 1988 Here Lies Buried tape (HR060). And wrapping up the set is ‘Raw Catalysts’, a tripped out alien effects workout that’s both space exploratory and whimsically fun. This is from the 1987 Cancerous Growth Beginning Of A New Age cassette album, originally released on Michael Thomas Jackson’s Xkurzhen Sound label and later reissued by Harsh Reality (HR305).
