FIND THE MOTHER
Review by Jerry Kranitz

Non Sequitur were the Chicago based trio of Kurt Piepenburg, Kris Piepenburg and Dave Sommerfeld. Based on the commentary in the tape notes, Radio Brownout seems to have some kind of garbage, hoarder or related theme.

These guys excel at creative and well produced multi-layered cauldrons that are deftly shaped into avant-garde blends of music, atmosphere, sundry sounds and effects. The band cover a lot of territory over 14 tracks. ‘Urchin’ is representative of several tracks, with its ethereal goth-pop blend of plodding guitar and organ melody, Halloween effects, echoed percussion blasts, and spectral voices. ‘Garbage House’ is typical of another side of the band, being energetically percussion dominated with weird but creatively placed effects, chant-rant vocals, and elephant trombone blasts. It’s like a tribal punk-jazz circus theme song.

At nearly 16 minutes, ‘Raratonga’ consists of steady tambourine beats, spacey soundscapes, grooving scratch patterns, otherworldly organ and voices, corrosive guitar bits, and periodic noise blasts roaring by. There’s a ghostly ambient-jazz feel to the music, but also a skittish, almost hip-hoppy quality. And once again the effects are deftly deployed to create something that is both musical and atmospheric. There are also more purely experimental tracks like ‘By The God’s It’s…’ and ‘Gibbous Squid’ which feature collages of music, clatter percussion, drones, and myriad voices samples.

Other highlights include the industrial punk ‘Grifter’, with its menacing combination of guitar licks and chant vocals. ‘Radio Brownout’ is a high energy tribal dance floor stomper with punk-poet vocals. ‘Not Strictly Fear (Remix) is a swirl of dance floor psychedelic electro-punk delirium. And ‘Find The Mother’ is by far the most aggressively noisy track of the set.
