SIDE ONE:
SANTA LUCIA WAYNE NEWTON GETS HIGH ALL THE WAY FROM MOSCOW |
SIDE TWO:
EGGS ESSENTIAL JUMPIN WITH JOYA SOUND ADVICE |
Review by Jerry Kranitz
Disism were the duo of Charles Rice Goff III and Killr ‘Mark’ Kaswan, who released many cassette albums of experimental fun on multiple labels, including Goff’s Taped Rugs Productions. Head Cold Fog is a collection of five pieces of music/voice/collage psychedelia.
‘Santa Lucia’ and ‘Sound Advice’ (the opening and closing tracks) were originally created for an Elvis Presley themed cassette compilation titled His Master’s Voice, to be released on Ron Lessard’s RRRecords label (Ron did not include them). ‘Santa Lucia’ is a brief but deliriously psychedelic and hilarious distortion of Elvis music/vocals. And ‘Sound Advice’ uses Disism’s Frippertonics-style tape loop system to help take the theme ever deeper into a wigged out whirlpool of Elvis acid-collage mangling and musical gobbledygook fun.
‘Wayne Newton Gets High All The Way From Moscow’ is the result of an afternoon improvisation that blends phonograph record manipulations with a wide variety of instrumentation. Imagine the musicians from a chamber ensemble taking way too much LSD, suiting up in their tuxes and gowns and then hitting the symphony hall stage. We’ve got nearly 46 minutes of drunkenly swaying and plucking strings, squalling horns, strange, often cartoonish voice samples, freaky guitar, whimsical effects, and a general sense of alter-dimensional drift. If you like mind-expanding (and a little zany) psychedelia, this is as completely experimental classical music pagan folk space exploratory out there as it gets.
‘Eggs Essential’ blends two tape loop recordings to create this improvised cello/guitar instrumental and vocal duet. It’s another art damaged psychedelic workout, though in this case a banquet of voices takes center stage, some of them pretty crazily deranged.
Finally, ‘Jumpin With Joy’ is a double-tracked tape loop collage that includes a sample from a Sammy Davis/Joya Sherill collaboration. Once again we’ve got a lengthy (27 minutes) journey into psychedelicized music, tape manipulation, creepy voices, effects, chaotically whirly/swirly atmosphere and more.
Charles Rice Goff III maintains an impressively detailed history at his Taped Rugs Productions website. Curious adventurers will find the entire catalog of audio and video releases archived there.
