REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
Quadraphase were a collective of musicians and sound artists who collaborated to improvise. Harsh Reality released a previous Quadraphase cassette album (Disturbances – HR166). EthnoTronik features the quartet of Andy Elfin, Mark Lyden, Mitch Rushton, and Penga. The side long tracks were recorded live on November 16, 1988, at the Turk’s Head in Birmingham, England.
Employing guitar, bass, and an array of keys, synths, and effects, Quadraphase take off into the cosmos to create a floating space excursion punctuated by pulsating, soaring, sequenced effects and patterns. I love the mesmerizing magic carpet ride experience kept interesting by a steady stream of action and adventure. It’s like floating merrily in space while dodging objects and repelling attacks. And there are segments in Part 2 that feature interesting collages of voice samples and music. Lots of creative use of effects, drones, soundscapes, melodies and samples that contribute to the continually evolving concept.
