REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
Legoland is the West Virginia based duo of Bunk Nesbit and Frog Moore on an array of guitars, bass, synths, tapes, effects, and drum programming. Baby Needs A Rifle is the second Legoland release on Harsh Reality, following Meat Is Murder, But Peanut Butter Is Boring (HR110). There’s lots of variety across these 11 tunes, so let’s take the grand tour…
‘Planet Hell’ features dancefloor rave electronica with an end of the world punk attitude and lyrics. ‘Dogs’ is pure rockin’, with a little swing, plus killer buzzsaw guitar, a cool and strange spacey vibe, and doomy vocals. ‘Ancient’ is a bouncy synth pop tune that sounds like a punk anthem. ‘Dissolution (Man Or Machine?)’ consists of freaky swirly sci-fi goth-punk-pop with a catchy melody. ‘The Legion’ took me by surprise, being a high-octane, thrash rocker with a metallic edge. ‘Solution?’ is a cool grooving guitars and synths rocker with (slightly) more optimistic lyrics. ‘The Grill’ is the purest hard rocking song of the set, cranky out a nasty Stooges attitude. Frog is a damn good guitarist! ‘Neo-Psychedelic Love Song’ is similar, being a chunky, fist pumping rocker. The upbeat, melodic ‘Solitude’ is the most ‘lighthearted’ song of the set and possibly the strongest candidate for a pop single.
Finally, the set includes two examples of a Legoland live performance, which impressively reproduces the tripped out synths and guitar punk-pop of their studio songs.
