HR148 - Various Artists - Belgium - C46 — 1989
REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
The Harsh Reality ‘Country’ series continues with artists from Belgium.
I’d not heard of Hybryds before, but they seem to still be active as new material is on their Bandcamp page. Their first entry is an eerily alluring blend of spacey ooo-wee-ooo sci-fi soundtrack and metallic cling-clang Industrial beats. The second track is a rhythm and beats dominated space-ambient groove tune. I like the pleasantly robotic tribal vibe. After a few minutes a fairyland flute melody joins in, playing pied piper to the rhythmic pulse and augmented by trippy effects. Great marriage of contrasts! A third track is credited to Hybryds & Alpha, which is similar in spirit to the other tracks, being a lightly tribal soundscape piece. Pretty cool stuff and I’ll be exploring more on the Hybryds Bandcamp page.
Los Pacos is also new to me, though I know nothing about them other than this track. Which is a shame because this is a very nice 10 minutes of smoothly rhythmic Industrial clatter, buzzing, effects, and anguished vocals, with a ritualistic feel. The recording sounds like a live performance.
Somnambulist is a project from Mark Burghgraeve. He’s also new to me but a search reveals that he too
has recent material on Bandcamp. His short track is a tasty, though straightforward Goth infused keyboard instrumental.
Lucy & MT & D.J. Pierre E are apparently a trio who play a hyper-kinetic brand of spaced out dancefloor grooves with lots freaky voices and effects. Rave music for aliens.
Vidna Obmana (aka Dirk Serries) is the one artist on the collection I was already acquainted with, and his entry is a meditatively flowing space-ambient excursion. Check out his Bandcamp page for a muthaload of albums,
Finally, I’m not familiar with Bambix, though their too short contribution is a cool and strange bit of circus symphony and wigged out voices.
