HR143 - Minóy - To Be Continued/To Be Continued - C60 — 1990
REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
To Be Continued/To Be Continued was the third Minóy cassette album to be released by Harsh Reality, following HR083 Its No Game and HR092 Nervous Complaint (in addition to the HR096 Slaughter In The Air collaboration with Mental Anguish).
Inspired by Wim Wenders’ 1987 film, Wings Of Desire, the C60 consists of two side-long pieces. ‘I Know Nothing/I Know Nothing’ opens with jumbled efx’d voices and chaotic rumbling turbulence, as if flying alone in an alter-dimensional cargo plane. The bumpy ride is soon joined by a crooning saxophone melody which intermittently pops in and out, along with periodic voices speaking discernible words, tape manipulated music, scratching, grating, and more, while the foundational turbulent pattern steadily drones on. But just after the 10-minute mark the proceedings are interrupted by a narrative in Spanish that serves as a thematic transition. An odd combo of jazz music, solo saxophone and… wait for it… Ted Nugent, briefly serenades before returning to the original theme, which gradually develops for the duration.
‘To Be Continued/To Be Continued’ begins with a brief collage of songbird folk singer and symphony orchestra samples, before rifling between jazz, various rock bands, and a dizzying mash-up of effects. Minóy challenges the listener as he cut-up zig zags between brain scrambling effects, freaky melodies, Spanish rants, a crazy stylistic variety of music samples, harsh ambience, and much more. File under Sound Sculptures for Psychedelics.
NOTE: Phillip ‘PBK’ Klingler was the caretaker of the late Minóy's archives and curated an enormous museum of both previously and never before released cassette albums on Bandcamp. Check it out here: https://minoy.bandcamp.com
