REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
Puddentate is the duo of David Rose and Mark Bramhall playing acoustic guitar Blues original and cover songs. The duo strum and solo, sounding like bedroom versions of old time Blues, which sounds nice when the recording quality of some of the earliest Blues masters is considered. What makes this set especially fun is the assortment of cover tunes. We’ve got acoustic Blues versions of everything from ‘House Of The Rising Sun’, J.J. Cale’s ‘After Midnight’, Dan Fogelberg, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Marshall Tucker Band, and ‘Freeeee Biiiiiiird’! The recording was made at Harsh Reality label commander Chris Phinney’s studio and Chris contributes his made-for-the-Blues vocals to two songs.
Viewed from another angle, this is some of the more ‘normal’ sounding music on the otherwise experimental and electronica oriented Harsh Reality label. Due to the ravages of nearly 35 years, the tape drags a bit in many spots, producing interesting results. On the one hand, the Blues could be said to benefit from a bit of excess ‘drag’. Furthermore, the drag could be spun as adding an unintended artist/years-of-decay collaborative experimental edge to the recording. In any event, the listener will still get a solid sense of what this cassette album was about. And preserving history is the primary goal of the Harsh Reality archive project.
Much later in the Harsh Reality catalog (HR320) is another Puddentate set that couldn’t be more different from this one, featuring the trio of Rose, Bramhall, and Phinney cranking out a set of total space acid-psych kosmiche rock. Stay tuned…
