HR133 - Context - The Return Of Structures, Product 34 - C60 — 1989
REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
Context is the alias used by German artist Stefan Schwab, who also ran the Tonspur Tapes label. This C60 is one in a series of ‘Product’ cassette albums and consists of multiple brief, minimal electronic statements. We’ve got drifting soundscapes, rhythmically tribal machinery, duo buzzes and pulsations, air duct flow accompanied by robotic radio pulses, frenetically wavering static, spacey alien pulsations, dizzying insect swarms, choppity head-spinning electronic dance, floating space electronica, and more.
I like the way Schwab creates a sense of staggered, fluttering, and off-kilter rhythm combined with various soundscapes and effects, which offers variety amidst the seemingly simplistic minimalism throughout the set. A 60-minute collection of experimental meditations, like bits of pieces of ideas that could be used in more fully fleshed out or collaborative works.
