HR131 - Paradox - Foetal Manicus - C46 — 1989
REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
Foetal Manicus is a live set from UK space rockers Paradox. The sound quality is bootleg but sufficient to get a sense of what a solid band this was. Similar in spirit to 80s underground space/psych bands like Omnia Opera, Nukli, and Sponge, Paradox crank out high energy rock with swirly keys, alien electronics, and wild eyed shamanic vocals. This is a dizzying set that at times feels like a space-metal-thrash stampede. Much of it is instrumental, though the vocal segments certainly make their presence known. These guys pound away relentlessly but have their (brief) quieter moments and do a fair bit of thematic shifting around to keep things interesting. Songs are all in the 3-5 minute range.
Imagine early blanga jamming era Hawkwind with a theatrical metal edge and you might get something like Paradox. I’ve got two other tapes by them, both also live. Would be great to hear a studio recording.
