HR123 - Der Pilz - Der Kosmos Natur Führer - C60 — 1989
REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
Der Pilz is the project of German artist Lutz Pruditsch who ran the Trümmer Kassetten label that co-released this tape with Harsh Reality. Pilz is German for Mushroom, with mushrooms being prominent on the covers. Little can be made of the text so if there are track titles it's anyone’s guess. A Google translation of the Der Kosmos Natur Führer title produces The Cosmos Nature Guide.
The entire C60 is a medley of synths, effects, voice samples, and even noodling acid and industrial rock which are played, collaged, and tape manipulated in various ways. Synth notes are held as strange voices are playfully inserted. I like the segment where mad scientist laboratory effects are combined with plinkity strings and crashing percussion. Minimal machine shop vibes pulsate and hypnotically drone. Bubbly sci-fi effects float along to atmospheric industrial action. Crazed tape dragging of acid guitar and effects produces dizzying results on the brain. Haunting music that feels like Sunday mass at the Goth church. I like the acid minstrel, art damaged folk-Americana ‘song’, followed by a brief, zippy synth run, and then what could be a traditional Celtic folk song. Sparsely minimal yet mesmerizing fuzz rocking jams. Deeply droned, stoned, and atmospheric downer music punctuated by German voice samples. Industrial grade elephants in a factory wailing and grating.
In summary, a wildly varied hodgepodge of abstract, experimental, playful electronics, music, and collage work.
