REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
Schuster is UK based musician Tim Bayes. The Assumption cassette album is a blend of industrial noise and rhythmic elements that will appeal to sound collage and Throbbing Gristle fans.
The set opens with the industrial collage/dance-mix ‘M*V*Agusta’, thrusting the listener into the hurly burly of what sounds like a locomotive roaring through a machine shop to a bang-on-cans tribal groove. ‘Etched Filings’ features hypnotically honking noise-jazz, as horns flutter and blare to ambient percussion and chanting voices. ‘Sink Brine’ is a blend of searing Frankenstein lab electronics and jaw harp led hillbilly hoedown. ‘Flag’ is a reverberating throb rocker with dizzying crowd samples that feels like 3am at an industrial rave party. This is one of my favorite tracks of the set.
‘Silencer’ kicks off Side B, being a somewhat dense and doomy noise collage with a pleasantly grainy and rhythmic feel. ‘Aboulia’ is another throbbing industrial pulse rocker, with an apocalyptic Throbbing Gristle vibe. ‘Slowly Tied’ is an intensely pulsating glom of machinery, noise textures, sneakily inserted electronic tones, and otherworldly voices. ‘Frances M’. is a shock, starting off as the most aggressively noisy track of the set. But it quickly shifts gears to an oddly whimsical, off-kilter rhythm-tone and anguished vocals noise-‘song’. Finally, ‘Socio’ wraps things up as one of the more ambient tracks of the set. A repetitive head throbbing clatter pulsation is front and center throughout, accompanied by voices and light static, and a footstep fading into the distance finale.
