HR110 - Legoland - Meat Is Murder, But Peanut Butter Is Boring - C90 — 1989
REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
Legoland is the West Virginia based duo of Bunk Nesbit on voice, synths, tapes, and drum programs, and Frog Moore on guitar, bass, FX, and drum programs. The title of this tape only hints at the fun that’s dished out over 90 minutes and 19 songs.
Characteristic of many of the songs is the sci-fi robot-punk ‘The Mind Pollution’. I love the searing guitar with bashing chords and ripping licks, staccato electro-drums, and moodily intense vocals that give the music a gothic edge. Other highlights include the turntable scratching psychedelic dementia goth-punk of ‘Red Nails’. The lyrics are quite a bummer: “Break my bones into pieces, hammer and nails into my skin, hammer and nails into my heart”. ‘In Sickness And In Health’ features more sci-fi goth-psych that incorporates the classic bride walking down the aisle melody to inject a damaged marching dance vibe. ‘Burial Song’ is different, being a peacefully drifting pop tune. But that’s the core melody and vocals. The song is anchored by incessantly swirling guitar riffs and steady percussion blasts. I love the contrasts that gel so cohesively.
‘Ruin’, and especially ‘An Ounce Of Pain’ are Legoland’s brand of bouncy psychedelic electro dancefloor sunshine-pop. ‘Deadworld’ features doomy yet pop styled space-rock. ‘Lord Of The Harvest’ cranks out swinging psychedelic pop-rock with screaming wah guitar. ‘All So Sad’ is one of the most manically hyper-active pop-punk tunes of the set. And ‘Painfully Mistaken’ is jangly pop with an acidic edge.
This album is yet another example of 1980s lo-fi yet creatively constructed and impressively composed songs. LOTS of great guitar throughout the entire set. Helios Creed fans would dig this. Legoloand also color the songs with lots of fun radio/TV samples.
Note that Bunk also ran the Red Nail Music label and maintains a Bandcamp archive of its releases:
