REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz

Kopfschmerstablette is a solo project from Michael Wuizer, who headed up the German Clockwork Tapes label. My introduction to Kopfschmerstablette was Michael’s contribution to the HR069 Woundz Never Heal! compilation. This C60 consists of 11 tracks, ranging from 3-7 minutes. It’s all very experimental and sound exploratory. It struck me as someone having fun getting acquainted with their gear.

Side One opens with ‘Russe Oder Deutscher’, a deep space blend of windswept rumbling, droning noise and background voices. ‘Reisender In Schwarz’ features weirded out rising, falling and stilted fun with spaced out tones and fuzzy, scratchy radio signals. ‘Eingleisig’ sounds like an electronic train chugging down the tracks. ‘Realitatsgetreu’ sounds like electronic bees buzzing around, with shifting rhythmic patterns as if the swarm were a regiment practicing drills. It soon morphs into a spacey pattern that is part sing-song melodic and part rhythmic pulsations. ‘Zeit’ features an interesting contrast between buzzing textures, what sounds like a harp melody, plus random voice samples. And more electronic insects against minimally pulsating, buzzing and whistling effects and synth notes are heard on ‘Das Ende Des Weges’.

Side Two kicks off with ‘Wild One’, with its repetitive wah-wah pattern, which playfully knob twiddling zig zags between gurgles, electro water drips, and goofy sounds. “Containerschiff’, followed by ‘Vergebt Mich Nie’ are all spacey effects and atmospheric exploration. ‘Only A Test’ is one of the more varied tracks. It’s a spacey mash-up of machine shop, jackhammer, urban, voice and scream samples, electro rave up and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Finally, ‘1. Invasion’ is a cool combination of audiobook narrative and dancey prancey synth melody.
