REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
Based in Nürnberg, Germany, PCR stands for Partidul Comunist Român. The contact name on the tape is Constantin Alecu in, but some Googling indicates the band was a trio with Constantin, his brother Adrian, and Peter Schuster. I really enjoyed this tape…
Side A begins with ‘Allein Bis 3000’, with its dark mood, pulsating atmospheric drone-keys, and a mallet pounding beat, that struck me as combining to create a mesmerizing drone take on the Residents Mark Of The Mole. ‘Fersentanz’ has a spitter-sputtery, faucet leaking pulse that lays the rhythmic foundation for more haunting keyboard meditation. I like the strange contrasting combination of skittish dripping beats, darkly melodic keyboard, grinding blasts, and other effects. Vocals are later introduced, giving the music a ghostly Industrial edge. ‘Survey’ is a little different, with similar minimalist drone keys, but also a syncopated pattern that recalls Berlin school kosmiche. Toss in spooky voices and it all makes an eerily interesting concoction.
‘Hidden Symptoms’ demonstrates how much can be accomplished with two repetitively droning notes plus squishy blasting electronic pulses and a barely perceptible, lightly anguished guitar melody. Darkly, strangely, beautiful. As the music segues into ‘Wealth And Inequality’, the guitar is more prominent and chaotically plucking. Soon the drone-keys take over and descend into a low register downer overdose, only to be taken over by the most upbeat, spirited melody I’ve heard in this set yet. I love the teetering among uplifting and totally downer moods.
Side B is different and my favorite. ‘Wennihr Schwalben Werdet, Werden Die Steine Schreien I.’ is such a long title I had to pump it into the Google translator, which spit out ‘When you become swallows, the stones will scream’. This starts off beautifully, sounding like an airily ghostly horror soundtrack, but also with a Klaus Schulze vibe. Spectral other-dimensional voices, rat-a-tat percussion, cosmically swirling and windswept effects. It’s like a combination of chanting shaman in limbo, Industrial drive, and cosmic effects parade, and as it seamlessly blends into ‘The Fall Of Publique Man (Prionfact-Die Sage Von Der Welt)’, it settles into stiltedly dancey Industrial, Horror-Rock song. ‘The Darker Proof’ is similar but more stripped down and percussion dominated. The percussion is high energy tribal at first, but soon develops a still tribal but tap dance across the stage feel. I love the cool grooving yet flowing atmospheric vibe. This theme continues right into the closing track, ‘Wennihr Schwwalben Werdet, Werden Die Steine Schreien II’, which brings the set to a cool freaky hip-shaking end.
