REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
Bande Berne Crematoire were a Swiss band (Google translates to Berne Crematorium Band). BBCT – 2 was licensed by Harsh Reality from the Calypso Now label, which originally released the tape in 1985. This is a short set at barely more then 30 minutes, but I like Bande Berne Crematoire’s brand of super lo-fi minimal synth/darkwave/industrial electronica with bits of experimental fun.
After a Spanish language speech intro the band launch into ‘Rosa Bernet’, a dance floor electronica tune with a tasty hip-shaking charm. ‘STR’ opens with a radio sports broadcast engulfed in spacey effects, accompanied by a far more quirky, dramatic, and theme building style of electronica. I like how it twists and turns with the music and sportscast alternately being at the forefront. And for the last minute or so it descends into a windswept ambience and radio dial static finale that segues seamlessly into ‘Kranzø Røses’. This track sets a weather beaten ambient-noise theme before kicking into a darkly eerie yet groove-laden minimal synth-pop meets sci-fi soundtrack tune.
‘Consume’ consists of more lo-fi theme driven electronica, sounding like a battlefield shootout alongside the feel of skating along the radio dial with fuzz beats, before settling into a menacing industrial/darkwave song that nicely maintains the battlefield vibe. ‘STR Remix’ revisits the track from Side A, though on this remix the sports broadcast is much clearer. The electronica is quirkily percussive, creating a more barebones version of the track. But it gets more experimental too, being a casual collage of the broadcast and a succession of beats and effects. Finally, ‘Ende’ is an upbeat lo-fi dance floor industrial robot stomper that closes the set.
