HR072 - Nisus Anal Furgler — C60 — 1988
REVIEW by Jerry Kranitz
Nisus Anal Furgler were the Swiss duo of Rudi Tüscher and Martin Schori. Tüscher also ran the Calypso Now label that this tape was licensed from. These guys mix up music and experimental collage in ways that are different from a lot of similar artists. My descriptions may sound crazy but it all comes together in creatively fun ways.
The music was recorded live at AJZ in Biel on December 18, 1983. The set opens with ‘Na zugelacht, ihr Lachlackel!’, featuring sqronking saxophone, frenetic synth runs, metal percussion, and warbly rumbling scratchy soundscapes that make for a free-jazz, kling-klang and noisy windswept jam. I’m really diggin’ these guys’ idea of jazz. I love the plinky out-jazz guitar solos, crazy sax and ‘vocalizations’, and hallucinatory ambience on ‘Das Gedankenschrapnell’. ‘Auglsprang Blühfärbel’ is a voices samples collage, creating a strange chorus of pulsating chants and German language spoken word, accompanied by steroidal robot punk-jazz guitar and freeform sax jamming. A great blend of wild music and tape collage work. ‘Das fickfackernde Eumel’ is a psychedelic glom of guitar and electronics that are like a cross between Sun Ra and Hawkwind ‘Space Ritual’, being alternately dreamy and noise-jazzy. But soon we’re immersed in a chorus of voice samples, most of which are yelling or conversing, eventually converging into a bubbling cauldron of weird jazz, multiple varied psychotic meltdown voices, and dancehall French song. And that’s just Side 1!
The flip side kicks off with ‘Prinzip der Bezüglichkeit’, which begins with variably sped spoken word and rumbling windstorm effects, before being joined by a duel of guitar chord crashes and wailing elephantine sax. I’m loving the nutty combo of components these guys bring together. ‘Eine Ohrfeige dem öffentlichen’ sounds like a collage cross between psychedelic looped/backwards alter-dimensional stream, ambient waves, Nascar road race, ear piercing screech, busking out-jazz sax sqronk, radio voice samples and narrative bits, and ploinky grooving beats. Could have sworn that was Zamfir’s pan flute at the end! ‘Geschmack’ is the most funky jazzy good time bouncy dance grooving tune of the set, though the guys are still in collage mode, mixing in voices and other effects. Finally ‘La concierge (au sous-sol)’ brings to mind Sun Ra at his most tribally Ra-jazzy. Very impressive. I’ll look forward to the next HR073 tape, which is another Nisus Anal Furgler.
